The Distributors of TVA Power

photo of power linesThe Tennessee Valley Authority generates electricity, but it relies on 154 different local power companies—located all over the Valley—to resell and distribute this power to homes and businesses.

The local power companies consist of municipal utilities and cooperatives, or co-ops. The municipal utilities are owned by a city, county or town, and the co-ops generally serve the more rural areas of the Valley. All of them are publicly owned. That means they’re not in business to make a profit but to serve the needs of the people.

A group called the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association represents most of the distributors of TVA power. The distributors work as partners with TVA to give the best service and prices to the people who use TVA power.
